Laser dentistry fillings at Delgado Dental Group
Hey guys, it's Dr. Natalie from Delgado Dental Group, and I'm here today to answer some common questions about laser dental fillings.
What is a laser cavity filling and how does it work?
A laser cavity filling is essentially a regular filling, but instead of using a drill, we use a laser to prepare the tooth and remove the cavity from the tooth.
How does laser technology differ from traditional methods of filling cavities?
Laser technology differs from the regular method of cavity preparation because it uses laser energy to remove tooth structure and the cavity. This is different from a traditional filling where we manually remove the cavity and tooth structure with a drill. The laser does the cutting from a little farther away using the energy and frequency of the laser.
What are the advantages of using a laser for cavity fillings?
Some advantages of using a laser for a cavity filling include that often we do not need to numb the tooth. The laser has a numbing effect because it blocks the pain receptors in the tooth with its energy and frequency. Another advantage is the laser's sterilizing effect, which kills off the bacteria on the tooth when removing the cavity. A traditional drill does not kill any bacteria, but the laser energy sterilizes the tooth and eliminates the bacteria causing the cavity.
Are there any disadvantages to laser fillings for teeth?
Because we do not numb the tooth when using the laser, you may feel more sensations as we work on the tooth. While using the laser, you might feel a cold sensation and more vibration or pressure on the tooth. If you find this uncomfortable, you can let us know during the procedure, and we can provide traditional anesthetic to make the area more comfortable.
Is a laser filling good for teeth and why might someone choose this option?
The laser is great because it has an antimicrobial and sterilizing effect, which helps clean out the tooth better than a traditional drill. You don't have to numb the tooth with anesthetic, making it a suitable option for those who are scared of needles or have high dental anxiety.
Does a laser cavity filling hurt or is it pain-free?
Typically, laser fillings do not hurt. Our patients report having no discomfort and are very happy with the results and the procedure. We have a very high success rate with using the laser for fillings. If at any point during the procedure the patient experiences mild discomfort, we can adjust the laser settings or administer local anesthetic.
How effective are laser dental fillings in treating cavities?
Lasers are very effective in treating dental cavities. When using it on the tooth, you can see when it transitions from removing tooth structure to removing the cavity. This clear transition helps ensure that we remove all the affected tissue, resulting in a clean and solid tooth structure.
Does laser teeth whitening work on fillings or will it affect the appearance of dental work?
Laser teeth whitening removes superficial stains on the teeth but does not change the color of tooth fillings. Once a tooth filling is placed, it will stay that color, and the laser won't alter it. If you're considering laser teeth whitening, it's best to do it before any fillings are placed, or choose a lighter shade filling to match the result of the whitening.
Are there specific types of cavities or patients that are suited for laser dental fillings?
Typically, for small fillings, the laser is very effective in completing the entire procedure. If there's a cavity that's larger or closer to the nerve, we may numb the tooth in case it turns into a root canal. However, for midsize to smaller fillings, the laser is perfect due to its sterilizing effects.
How does a water laser cavity filling work?
During a filling with the laser, the laser shoots water and air to ensure the tooth does not overheat and to help clean off debris. You will feel sensations of cold, water, and air blowing on the tooth, which is something to expect during your dental filling with the laser.
What is the cost of laser dental fillings compared to traditional dental fillings?
There is no difference in cost whether you want to have the filling done traditionally or with the laser. It's the same cost regardless. We don't want cost to be the deciding factor in choosing which method is more comfortable or preferred for you.
Are laser fillings available in all dental clinics or are they limited to specific locations?
Dental laser fillings are not offered in all clinics. You need specific technology, like the Solea laser, to perform laser fillings. Not many offices offer this service, which makes us unique. We are very proud to offer it to our patients.
